Suzuki will introduce a new volt self-charging hybrid powertrain early next year, which will be offered in the Swift Sport, Vitara and SX4 S-Cross models. The Japanese automaker claims that their new hybrid powertrain will offer up to 20 percent lower CO2 emissions, more torque and a 15 percent improved fuel economy in the WLTP combined cycle. The new volt hybrid powertrain will directly replace the current 1.
The newly developed powertrain is very lightweight in its designwith the company claiming a weight penalty of less than 15 kg.
It consists of a volt lithium-ion battery, an integrated starter generator ISG and a 48VV converter. The system will be attached to the new K14D Boosterjet engine, an improved version of the outgoing unit.
The ISG is belt-driven and will assist the petrol engine with extra torque from low down, offering lb-ft Nm from 2, rpm. The battery, together with the converter unit, will be located under the front seats for better weight distribution. A new year is a good excuse to make changes in life, and in my case, it's bidding farewell to my Suzuki Swift. First and foremost, fuel economy was stellar. Sure, a 'proper' hybrid like the Toyota Yaris would have sipped less petrol, but the That one would be overlooked by most people, but it at least gave me some justification for using the hooks in the boot to keep my shopping bags in place.
And top-spec SZ5 trim gets loads of kit, my favourite being the LED headlights: an absolute must for anyone who lives in the sticks.
The gearbox was nice to use, too, with a precise clutch and slick shift action. Road noise was a tad loud at times, too.
